An Indian mother’s lonely hearts advert seeking a groom for her gay son has prompted more than 100 marriage proposals from men around the world.

Padma Iyer, 58, a housewife and the mother of popular gay rights activist Harish Iyer placed India’s first advert seeking a partner for a same-sex marriage.

The advert, published in India’s biggest selling tabloid, read: ‘Seeking 25-40, well-placed, animal-loving, vegetarian groom for my son (36, 5’11”) who works with an NGO.’
